about
This is a song about my problems with the rules of conventional masculinity. We see a lot of representations of men as stoic, rugged and always independent, and I've personally struggled with the ways in which that standard model doesn't fit.
The fourth verse used to be a more positive ending about how we're learning, but it didn't feel quite right, and something happened which prompted me to scrap it and write what's there now.
lyrics
There's a hole in my words, in my words
And I'm not surprised that nothing grows on rock instead of earth
I've seen so many good examples of men who always won
Who could fill the screen with anger, love and hurt tied in their tongue
Just a nod is all you need to solve how lonely you've become
There's a hole, there's a hole in my words
There's a hole in my clothes, in my clothes
Took me twenty years to find it, couple more to sew it closed
I've seen so many good examples of how I could be free
Wearing jeans more thick and sturdy than I ever need to be
Never measure with a mirror whether it hangs above the knee
There's a hole, there's a hole in my clothes
There's a hole in my touch, in my touch
And it's telling me there's something wrong with wanting it too much
I've seen so many good examples of friendship standing tall
And every thumping hug is proof the heart's a muscle first of all
And the soft embrace is locked away 'til romance comes to call
There's a hole, there's a hole in my touch
There's a hole where it hurts, when it hurts
And if we don't know how to share it then it's only getting worse
I've seen so many good examples of gritted teeth and fists
And if I just could catch my breath I swear I'll fix it after this
And as our broken bodies fail we say "That's just the way life is"
There's a hole where it hurts, in my touch, in my words
There's a hole, there's a hole...
